P2K attended an evening dinner and speaking engagement featuring Judge Roger Benitez (Ret.), hosted by San Diego County Gun Owners at The Butcher Shop in San Diego. The event brought together members and supporters of the Second Amendment community for an engaging and educational evening.
Judge Benitez, a Cuban immigrant who grew up during the communist takeover of Cuba and Fidel Castro’s rise to power, shared personal reflections on how political and cultural changes can unfold gradually. He drew comparisons between his experiences growing up in Cuba and the evolving landscape of constitutional rights in the United States, emphasizing that significant changes often happen incrementally rather than all at once.
Judge Benitez also discussed his experience presiding over significant Second Amendment cases, including challenges to California’s restrictions on large-capacity magazines and assault weapons. His rulings in these cases were subsequently overturned by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, placing him at the center of contentious legal debates over gun rights.
His remarks offered attendees an opportunity to reflect on the importance of understanding constitutional history, following developments in the courts, and recognizing how changes in law can accumulate over time.
The evening also provided an opportunity for fellowship among San Diego County Gun Owners and other Second Amendment supporters. Guests enjoyed a dinner featuring a prime rib carving station and a variety of delicious selections.
P2K appreciates the opportunity to attend this informative event and hear Judge Benitez share his experiences and perspective on the Constitution, the judicial system, and the ongoing legal debate surrounding the Second Amendment.
