P2K NEWS - NRA USAS Shotgun Coach School

Thirteen coaches from as far away as Nevada met at P2K Range this weekend to obtain their coaching certification from USA Shooting and the National Rifle Association. Dennis Rohman, National Coach Development Staff Member, taught the Level One National Shotgun Coach Course in the classroom and conducted the practical exercise on the lower trap field.

This two day course brings coaches to a new level! Becoming a certified shotgun coach is required by most high schools and colleges. NRA/USAS Certified Coaches share the same respect and qualifications other athletic sports coaches are governed by.

Over 3800 level one coaches are active in programs around the world today. Coaches are required to meet additional training and work in shotgun programs to keep their credentials current.
Many of the coaches that attended this course are active in the clay target sports programs throughout the southwest and their athletes compete nationally and internationally. Several high schools were represented and wanted to increase their coaching staffs knowledge.

Curriculum is extensive and a wide range of information is broadcast over the two days. Coaches learn teaching techniques in shotgun sports history, nomenclature, sports psychology, nutrition,  mental training, shooting fundamentals, ethics, problem solving, national governing body rule book use and goal setting. Coaches are taught to develop training plans, both short and long term, conduct practices, competition preparation and attendance.

Practical live fire demonstrations are required to insure the coaches understand and can demonstrate coaching points and evaluate athletes for proper corrections and skill development. All of the coach graduates are a welcome addition to existing or developing programs.
